off to the vet....

This afternoon I took Wicca to the vet after I arrived home to bloody diarrhea all over and a very lethargic dog. (as in no tail wag, and barely getting up off the floor) We did a blood panel which showed a slightly high red blood cell count, but still within normal. This ruled out Gastroenteritis, and Pancreatitis. Our other options are just a bug of some sort, or a blockage. So for now we are treating it pretty well as if it were Gastroenteritis.

Wicca is still not feeling good but she does seem to be improving. She hasn't thrown up or had diarrhea since this afternoon. She is still pretty uncomfortable though- moving stiffly and slowly. And is very tired. Sarah gave her a nice massage tonite, and that seems to have loosened up some tight stomach and back muscles. We are going to give it a day or two of the Flagyl, some other anti acid medication, and tramadol. If there is no improvement and she is still uncomfortable we are going to do an xray.

I am hoping that she will continue to improve- and that it is just a gastro flare up of some sort. Much better than the alternatives!

oh jeez. Poor Wicca. Ike has had colitis before and it is scary! Hopefully that is what it is and all will be well. I will keep her in my thoughts.

Amanda, PLEASE do an xray now. Our dogs like to eat "stuff" they shouldn't eat, and sometimes they do it for a long time before we see any symptoms. Several people have lost dogs because they had eaten rocks or mulch, many, who x-rayed, were able to do surgery and save their dogs. The wait and see/conservative treatment is normal, but the painkiller may just be masking the problem.

penni, wicca is not an eater of stuff. Pixel on the other hand...

She did really well last night- her appetite is back and she was pretty happy with her hamburger and rice breakfast.

The vet was pretty sure it was not a blockage as she hadn't been throwing up- which is usually what happens. They felt that the it was likely a stomach bug of some sort.

And from how she is this morning I would say that I agree.

Thanks for your concern though, and had Wicca been an eater of stuff (Pixel!) then I would have done the xrays first thing..
